The St. Croix Valley Master Gardeners Association is an all-volunteer organization. Established in 1997, it has since grown from 11 founding members to 100-plus members serving the communities we live in through an array of projects, service, public education, community grants and scholarships.
What We Do as Master Gardener Volunteers
ENGAGE our younger generations to value gardening and natural resources through hands-on learning experiences at a variety of local events such as Earth Day, Farm Safety Days, Home & Garden Expos, public schools, YMCA Camp St. Croix, Community Garden projects, Junior Garden U, summer library programs and 4-H groups. |
PARTICIPATE in specialty SCVMGA Garden Groups that help master gardeners become more knowledgeable about a topic of interest, such as the Variety Plant Trials group. This group evaluates vegetable, herb and flower plant varieties for growing habits, germination rates, flavor, size, color and texture. Results are published to help the general public. SCVMGA donates the seeds from the trials to community gardens, who then plant seed trial gardens. These gardens are open to the public. Each community garden has a sign and yearly updated seed trial information. Participating gardens are the Baldwin Community Garden, Houlton Elementary Community Garden, Hudson Hospital & Clinics Community Garden, New Richmond Community Garden, and UW Extension Demonstration and Learning Garden in River Falls.

EDUCATE the public about horticulture and gardening with our
"Ask A Master Gardener" booth positioned at local Farmers Markets, County Fairs and Community Home Shows. The Ask a Master Gardener booth is designed to generate interest in gardening and to help the public find answers to their questions. Master Gardeners also provide them with helpful tips and resources for additional information. Master Gardeners give presentations on horticulture topics to community groups, 4-H Clubs, Scout Troops, and at continuing education workshops and SCVMGA monthly meetings. SCVMGA monthly meetings also host outside speakers on a variety of horticulture related topics. The meetings are a great way to learn about new garden trends or issues in horticulture; meet up with fellow MGVs; and learn about volunteer needs. The meetings are open to the general public.
